Understanding Modernism

The character I choose that best demonstrates modernism vs post modernism is the Chancellor from "The Obsolete Man" by Rod Serling. In modernism there is a belief that nothing exists beyond what our senses perceive and in accordancewith this belief the chancellor deems there to be no God and orders that everyone else must believe the same way and anyone who does not follow is deemed obsolete from society. Through his ordering of this beleif he demonstrates another concept of modernism in that those with the power are able to dictate what is appropriate to be studied by all. At the end of the movie the Chancellor says, "In the name of God, let me out" which creates a contradiction in that even though he is very strongly modern he portrays some characteristics of post modernism and is therefore deemed obsolete to the government.

I choose Hitler because he was a dictator much like the Chancellor and much like him he contradicted himself by announcing that jews are obsolete when he himself had Jewish roots.
